Faced with the high solar heat gain through the glass surfaces during the summer months,
the Hilton Hotel management engaged V-KOOL Shanghai to retrofit V-KOOL® 70 on the entire
skylight covering the Coffee House. V-KOOL 70 was selected as the management did
not want to compromise the natural light entering the cafe with heat rejection. Working only
through the midnight hours to minimise disruption to hotel operations, the 7,000 sq. ft. project
took slightly under a month to complete due to the difficulty and access constraints of the
work site.

Competitors, like 3M also approached the management for this project but the business was
finally awarded to V-KOOL India after a product demonstration to the Management.
Installation of the 4,000 sq.ft. project was done over a period of 2 weeks and staff immediately
commented on the greater comfort due to the reduced heat gain from the glass. In addition,
window seating, which was once brought back, and away, from the windows were drawn back
to the windows after installation.

With an existing solar heat gain problem in the PoolSide Bar, Raffles Hotel Management
engaged V-KOOL Singapore to propose solar control solutions. An initial site survey and
Customer Needs Analysis conducted by V-KOOL Consultants, the building management were
recommended the superior spectrally-selective attributes of V-KOOL® 70 for the PoolSide Bar.
V-KOOL 70 allowed the maximum heat rejection to visible light transmission ratio available
in the market so that customers and staff experienced much needed cooling without darkening
the space. Total area installed was approximately 610 sq. ft. and was completed within a
span of 3-4 hours, in the early morning to minimise inconvenience and disruption to the bar.

Shortly after the inauguration of the hotel, it became apparent that heat gain from morning
and afternoon sun, through the hotel’s many large clear windows and glass, was a problem.
The heat was identified to be most problematic in two restaurants, namely Brio’s and Pontini,
which experienced immense heat from the afternoon sun. Assistant General Manager of CDL,
Mr. Jimmy Loons states, “We’ve tried curtains, drapes, fabric but (all) not very effective in
terms of controlling heat and for aesthetics purposes.”
Faced with increased energy consumption and affected business at the two restaurants, a
cost-effective and prompt solution had to be found. Recounting how a previous heat problem
was successfully resolved with V-KOOL for a tenant (from a former project), Mr. Loon contacted
V-KOOL Singapore again for consultation.

In a letter of appreciation sent to V-KOOL Malaysia, Mr. Lak highlighted, “After installation of the V-KOOL window coating at our Travellers Bar and Grill and Pasta & Mee Restaurant, we are glad that there has been a substantial reduction of heat.” Mr. Lak added, “...our customers are now able to enjoy the view sitting at tables by the windows, comfortably.” On energy savings and the UV protection from V-KOOL coatings, Mr. Lak commented, “I hope with the substantial rejection of solar heat, we shall be able to reduce our energy cost for air-conditioning.
Our expensive furniture and curtains are also protected from UV damage and should last
longer and look much better.”

AT A GLANCE
V-KOOL had solved the problem, getting rid of hot
spots without compromising the natural daylight of the space. It also preserved the exterior
appearance of the hotel. The hotel management was so pleased with the results that they
decided to install V-KOOL on all west-facing presidential-suites of the hotel, covering a glass
area of another 1,200 square feet.

Housing an impressive collection
of contemporary art and masterpieces, the museum is now an internationally recognized and
loved “resident” on 5th Avenue. A centrepiece of Wright’s vision is the skylight dome in the
rotunda. During the restoration of the museum in 1997, the concrete frame supporting the
skylight was patched. The original single glazed skylights were also replaced with refurbished
single-glazed panes incorporating V-KOOL® coatings. This new glazing system allowed
maximum visible light transmission, with significant reduction in solar heat gain and OTTV
compared to the original skylight. The added feature of UV inhibitors in V-KOOL also meant
that artworks are not subjected to additional UV radiation from the skylights. Patrons of the
world renowned art museum can now enjoy the art exhibits in a cool environment.
